St. Petersburg was founded by the Czar 'Peter the Great' in 1703 and with its 4.7million inhabitants, it is the second largest city in Russia, as well as its most important port. The city has been known by many various names including the name Pietrogrados, 1914 to Jan 26, 1924. Up until Sept. 6, 1991, it was named Leningrado by the Soviet Union.
